Homeschool Student Planner for Middle School and High School

I am a mom of 9, currently homeschooling 6, 3 of which are middle school and high school ages. My planning strategies have been different every year depending on the curriculum we’re using and the ages of my kids. Overall, though, I am a big believer in getting kids to be independent as much as possible. For my very young kids, I’ve always just created a simple one-page checklist for them and laminated it to use with dry erase marker. Once we reached the high school years, the need for them to be more independent increased significantly. So, I knew I needed a homeschool student planner for middle school and high school. The problem with most of the ones I’ve seen is that there are usually so many pages that seem to overwhelm my kids. They either have too many unnecessary pages or not enough of what we really need.

So, I decided to make my own. I created a student planner for middle school and high school that contains only the pages that they actually need and nothing else. No fluff, no grade keeping, (because I’m the one still keeping track of that) and no overwhelming pages. They are also filled with scripture to encourage them as they plan their school year. And of course, I wanted them to be aesthetically pleasing. I certainly enjoy opening up my planner a little more when it’s beautiful!

what’s included in the Homeschool student planner for middle school and high school?

Inside the weekly planning pages are a checklist style of planning so that it can ease middle schoolers into planning on their own, without feeling overwhelmed. Plus, it’s still an excellent way to continue planning into high school. Alongside every week there is a page to plan out each day for the week. To record practice times or special projects or labs to remember. There is also a 2-page spread for each semester to plan out a daily schedule. This is a great thing to plan out with your students! We don’t keep a rigid schedule, but its usually good to at least have a plan!

I’ve also included goal setting pages, reading logs and physical education logs. You don’t necessarily need to “teach” P.E. in your homeschool, but I do think physical exercise is important and tends to get overlooked in homeschool and life in general. I like to teach my kids the importance of daily exercise and this gives them a place to keep track of that. And if you want to count it as a credit for high school, all you need to do is add up the hours and voila!

My kids in particular love to write! They follow in the footsteps of their dad and spend their free time writing stories. They have plans to publish books in the near future. So I’ve also included (per their request) a writing log for them to keep track of stories/poems/ballads/essays and the like. It’s a great idea to give your kids credit for any writing they do, even if it’s outside of their normal curriculum!

This student planner is teen approved!

My teens helped with ideas for the pages that are included and also requested a place to record monthly accomplishments. Which I thought was a great idea! Sometimes it’s easy for us (especially as homeschoolers) to not realize what we’re actually accomplishing. So, it’s no wonder that our kids could feel this way at times too. Having them set goals but then also reflect on what they have accomplished can be a great motivator. Often, we can see that we actually accomplished more than we realized.

As extras, I’ve included an attendance record, notes, graph paper, and a website password tracker. We could all use that right?

They contain a dated calendar in front, while the weekly pages are left undated to do away with any guilt over skipped weeks and unused pages.
