Fall is finally here! So, today I thought I’d share with you our favorite fall and Thanksgiving picture books for kids. I woke up today to a nice crisp breeze outside and it inspired me to want to get out all of our favorite books for fall and get cozy on the couch!

Blending fall and thanksgiving books for homeschool

Fall is my favorite time of the year, not only because of all things pumpkin, but there’s just magic in the air that inspires learning in a whole different way! As a homeschooling mom for 13 years now, I have learned to let our homeschool flow with the changing seasons. When the air is cooling off from the brutal Texas heat, we take things a bit slower and enjoy more cozy read alouds, baking and more time outdoors. I still like to make things as educational as possible, so we blend cozy fall books with books all about Thanksgiving. They blend nicely together for us and we get in a bit of history while were at it!

We also love to read poetry all year long and finding fall themed poems can make for a fun teatime with your kids as well! You can grab my free fall poem and coloring page here for your littles!

A picture book about a scarecrow.

The Scarecrow by Beth Ferry

This is a tearjerker! At least for me! My kids look at me funny when I read this book through tears. It is such a beautifully illustrated book written in rhyme about a small, scared crow who lands in the arms of the scarecrow and the scarecrow does the unexpected. That’s all I’ll say so I don’t spoil the story for you! Trust me, you’ll want to grab this sweet book.

A pumpkin soup picture book.

Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper

Pumpkin Soup may look like a Halloween themed book, but it is not. It is just a sweet story about 3 animal friends, a cat, a duck, and a squirrel. They begin to cook their soup the way they always do. One does the stirring, one slices the pumpkin, and one sprinkles in some salt. One morning one of the friends decides he wants a different task and stirs up trouble among the friends and ends up leaving upset. The other friends run off to look for him. They end it with resolution and it’s just a sweet story to add to your collection!

A leaf thief picture book about a squirrel.

The Leaf Thief by Alice Hemming

The Leaf Thief is a cute story about a paranoid squirrel who believes that someone is stealing all of his leaves. This book describes what happens during the season of fall and how the leaves turn brown and fall off the trees. My little ones love this book and want to read it over and over again. It’s cute and funny and the pictures are terrific!

Cranberry thanksgiving picture book.

Cranberry Thanksgiving by Wende and Harry Devlin

Cranberry Thanksgiving is probably my absolute favorite book to read in fall! It is a fun book with quite a story about a girl and her grandmother’s cranberry bread recipe! Her grandmother is very protective of her recipe and is afraid someone might be trying to steal it! It’s a good lesson in how we make judgments about others and it’s a fun one that we all look forward to reading over and over again. Plus, Grandma’s Cranberry Bread recipe is in the back of the book for you to make with your kids! So fun!

The pictures are great and It’s one we like to read before Thanksgiving every year. And again, my older ones benefit from it as well!
