Easy Sourdough Bread Rolls

If you are a sourdough fan like I am, but don’t have time to prepare and bake bread as often as you’d like. (Or ever, if you’re like me) Then this recipe is for you! As a homeschool mom to 8 kids, I just don’t practically have the time to bake bread all day. I also want to feed my family healthier food though. That’s why these easy sourdough bread rolls are a no brainer.!

You’ll just need to make sure and plan a day ahead for when you need them. The dough is mixed together the day before and thrown into the fridge overnight. They’ll need to come out of the fridge the next day and set to rise for 3-4 hours. then bake! What takes so long is just waiting. These rolls are so easy to make and there’s no slaving away in the kitchen for hours for a healthy loaf of bread for your you and your family.

What can the sourdough bread rolls be used for?

These sourdough bread rolls are so versatile and can be used for anything from sandwich bread to dinner rolls or even hamburger buns! We use them for all of these things. My family loves them, picky eaters included. I have also shaped them elongated and made hot dog buns. They may or may not meet your expectations for this, though. It worked ok but they weren’t like your typical hot dog bun. Although, they were still delicious and everyone in my family prefers them over store bought bread either way!

What you’ll need to make Easy Sourdough bread rolls:

  • Flour
  • Salt
  • Sugar
  • Sourdough
  • Water

How To make these easy sourdourdough bread rolls:

Mix together the flour, salt, and sugar.

Add in the sourdough and water.

Mix together until well incorporated. The dough may be sticky and that’s perfectly fine! It’s also fine if it’s not. You don’t want it too dry though. Add in more water if it’s too dry, a tablespoon at a time.

Now you’ll place into a bowl and cover loosely, with a large plate or towel and place in fridge overnight.

The next day, the dough will be pliable. Lightly oil your hands and kneed together for just a minute and then form into a ball and divide evenly into 8 pieces. (16 if you want dinner rolls)

Place in oven and let rise 3-4 hours. You can use the bread proof option on your oven or simply turn on the interior light,

Once they have risen and doubled in size, remove from oven and turn oven to 350 degrees F. Bake for 25 minutes.

Allow to cool and serve!

Tip

If you’re using these for hamburger buns and you would like that nice golden top with sesame seeds, you can make an egg wash by whipping together an egg yolk and 1 tbsp. water and brush over top of buns. Then sprinkle sesame seeds on top of the wash right before baking!

Easy Sourdough Bread Rolls

These Easy Sourdough Bread Rolls are so yummy and versatile! They can be used for sandwich bread, dinner rolls, or even hamburger buns. My family loves them and we use them in place of pretty much anything that requires bread. They taste delicious and will save you time!
Prep Time:5 minutes
Cook Time:25 minutes
Total Time:30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour I prefer bread flour
  • 1/2 tbsp salt
  • 1/4 cup sugar feel free to add a bit more if making dinner rolls.
  • 1 cup sourdough fed or discard (I have used both ways and they turn out great)
  • 1 1/4 cup water add a tbsp more at a time if dough is too dry.

Instructions

  • Mix together the flour, salt, and sugar.
  • Add sourdough and water and mix until well incorporated. (The dough may be sticky and that's ok! You don't want it dry. Add a tbsp water at time if too dry)
  • Place dough in fridge overnight covered with plate or towel.
  • Remove from fridge the next day. Oil hands and kneed for about 1 minute.
  • Divide dough into 8 pieces (16 if making dinner rolls)
  • Place on baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Let rise in oven for 3-4 hours. You can turn on the bread proofing option on your oven or simply turn on interior light.
  • Once they are done proofing and have doubled in size, remove from oven.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake for 25 minutes.
  • Allow to cool and serve!

Notes
