I grew to love sour cream sauce from my mom. When I was a teen, her and I used to go to our favorite Mexican restaurant to eat and she would always order the sour cream sauce on whatever it was she was eating. I began to do the same when I would order my very favorite chimichangas. Let me tell you, it is to die for! If you have never tried sour cream sauce on enchiladas or chimichangas, you are severely missing out! It is the thing that your enchiladas are missing.

Now in my own family, my kids most often prefer queso over chimichangas, but I think I may have changed their minds with this sour cream enchilada sauce recipe! If my kids love it, I promise you will too!

Ingredients needed:

  • Butter
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • All-purpose flour
  • Chicken broth
  • Sour cream
  • Cream cheese
  • Green chilis

How to make sour cream enchilada sauce:

In a medium saucepan, you want to melt the butter over a low heat.

Once the butter has melted, add in the flour and whisk for one minute until it thickens.

Next add in the chicken broth, garlic powder, and onion powder and whisk until it is well combined.

Now increase the heat to a medium-high heat and allow the mixture to come to a boil. This should take about 5 minutes, and the mixture will be thick like a gravy.

Once it begins to boil, remove from heat and add in the cream cheese and green chilis. Mix well to combine.

Allow the mixture to cool for 5 minutes.

Once cooled, add in the sour cream and stir until fully combined.

The sauce will be thick and creamy and ready to use!

If you prefer a thinner sauce, now you can add in a little more chicken broth to thin it out.

Pour over your favorite enchiladas, chimichangas, or Spanish rice!
